Hudson River Air Accident Claims Nine Lives Between New York and New Jersey
Earlier this month, a sightseeing helicopter containing one pilot and five tourists from Italy collided with a small single engine plane over the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey. All people involved in the crash were killed. The Italian tourists were part of a group of 12 visiting New York from Bologna. Three people also lost their lives on board the single engine plane including a small child. Air traffic controllers have revealed that the small plane's pilot was given the choice of two routes. The pilot chose to head down the Hudson River which placed the aircraft on a direct course of collision with the helicopter. Further investigations are being conducted with air traffic controllers to gather more data and information on the events before the collision.
This crash marks the second this year in the heavily trafficked Hudson River airspace. The first of the two accidents occurred when a US Airways flight taking off from nearby LaGuardia Airport went down after a flock of birds collided with the aircraft's engine causing it to fail. Thankfully, no one on board that aircraft lost their life. All 155 people survived the crash.
